Seeing Blindness - a photographic project examing all types of visual impairedness - by healthcare photographer Robert Houser
Arriving to the set wearing dark glasses, he told me that he never took them off. He explained how he lost his eyesight and his entire right eye in Vietnam from shrapnel. I wanted to photograph him without his glasses, but I didn't want to press. Instead of asking, I told the story of a woman I had photographed for Facing Chemo. She had just had a double mastectomy, chemo and then radiation. She asked if I wanted to photograph the scarring and the burned skin across one side of her chest, and before I could answer, she had removed her shirt to let me photograph. As I was finishing the story, he pulled off his glasses. I never had to ask.
