So I rented a full-on payphone - the kind on a pedestal that you used to see at airports. I loaded the whole 6&#039; phone booth into my Isuzu Trooper and drove with a model to the Black Rock Desert, North of Reno Nevada. Yes, the same place that hosts Burning Man, though this would have been back when they had only hosted one or two up there. We drove two miles out onto the salt flats and then shot him hoping away from the phone, question answered! Shot cross-processed, Fuji transparency film processed as a negative (C-41), then printed by me for the magazine. Once the sun set it was completely black, there was no way we could find where we had entered. We had to camp there for the night in order to find our way out in the morning. I used to say that if an image made me laugh like Beavis and Butthead while I was shooting it, I knew it would be good. And, this still makes me smile every time I see it.</image:caption></image:image></url>

The project had me photograph six different people in various fields, with the same cross-processed film. The background is lit with hot lights, not LED, but actual tungsten Pepper hot lights, while the face is strobed. I vigorously shook my Hasselblad 500CM while exposing the film for a full second. The subject was frozen by the strobe, then she was instantly in relative darkness as the exposure built and &#039;moved&#039; in the background during the remaining full second exposure. Fuji Reala negative film was over exposed by 2 stops and then E6 processed as a positive transparency (slide). The techinique took precision, but then the results were random.</image:caption></image:image></url>

Photographed in the mid 90s in Phoenix, AZ at sunset standing on a track where he had been coaching all day. Shot hand held on a Hasselblad with an 80mm lens, a small soft-box on a strobe powered by a battery that I had just bought. He always wore that hat.</image:caption></image:image></url>

After some basic portraits, we spent an hour playing with my then favorite cross-processing technique. Kodak VPL negative film, over-exposed 2.5 stops with a full and a half CTO gel (orange) on the strobe. The film was then processed as a transparency (E6), usually pushed at least a half stop. Add to that a Pepper 150 tungsten hot light with a focusing snoot that would project the circles of the light&#039;s Fresnel lens onto the background. Shot at a full second exposure holding a Hasselblad 500CM with an 80mm lens over my head upside down, manually focusing each frame, then shaking the camera as I exposed. That still doesn&#039;t explain the location. Our 2500 square foot studio in San Francisco&#039;s can building had a 500 square foot bathroom. We stored our gear on huge racks next to three of these toilet stalls. Seemed like a good idea for a location at the time.</image:caption></image:image></url>

This was a real San Francisco based band that had a cameo and at some point in the show, Don Johnson was to hold their recent &quot;album.&quot; It was shot on cross processed slide film - processed C41 and printed. The image was made on Treasure Island in the huge hanger that Nash Bridges was using as a sound stage. Shot with available light toward a roll up door with a Hasselblad and a 250mm f4 lens. This image of a model on a beach in Point Reyes, CA was shot on slide film with a Hasselblad 202FA (focal plane shutter) and a 100 f2 lens (my favorite). I bought Hasselblad&#039;s 202FA body because unlike most Hasselblads it has a focal plane shutter - a shutter in the body not on the lens. This meant I was able to use their 100 f2 lens â a wider aperture/ faster lens than you could get in any medium format camera at the time. This allowed me push the envelope of hand held available light images, and this image was one of my early favorites. Shot on transparency film, it took hours to find this location on Stanford&#039;s campus where the existing light would come together perfectly for just 10-15 minutes. You can see modern YouTube videos of his lab in Lafayette, CA featuring the space cleaned up and sanitized after his death. However, when I shot this for a Swiss magazine in 2005, they had no intention of showing him in a glowing light. The place was a mess complete with rat droppings, open and broken jars, chemicals and dust strewn everywhere. Hollywood could not have created an uglier, F-ed up scene. And the smell. This image of young executive, Jeff Mallett, was shot with a 4x5 view camera: full-on old school with a black cloth over my head, a long cable release hanging from the lens. A Polaroid back and then film holders would slide into the camera, exposing a single frame taking about a minute each. The field of focus was &#039;swung&#039; so that only his eyes were sharp, which meant he and I had to stay quite still. I probably only shot 8 frames for this image â a far cry different from the 500+ frames I might shoot on a digital camera for a portrait now.</image:caption></image:image></url>

Almost every magazine job I did was with a computer related business that was just starting out. In 2000 I averaged over 4.5 shoots a week, and since I tried to take Wednesdays off, that meant I did at least one double a week. This guy worked for LookSmart, anyone remember them? Before Google became ubiquitous there was Yahoo!, Excite and LookSmart - the latter ostensibly reviewing the sites they recommended with real people. Imagine that, search results that were verified by humans. Every time LookSmart hired someone new, which was almost twice a month, they had me come by, late in the afternoon to shoot executive portraits. With a backdoor on South Park into their offices, we could park and set up in 15 minutes. This guy was an evangelist of some kind for LookSmart, but also a comedian, and he arrived to the shoot looking just like this. Shooting with a 28 mm lens, the lighting presents a problem - you cannot have any light on the table; otherwise, you will see scratches on the glass and reflections, but if you wait too late in the day, you won&#039;t have any light under the shoe â remember that everything below the glass has to be wrapped in black.</image:caption></image:image></url>

That motion and blur contrasted with the stillness of her face. I knew it would be a challenge to get the motion right and it turned out that I needed to shoot at a 1/200th of a second to freeze her face. She had to spot looking straight up. If you have ever done a panned blur shot, you know a long lens accentuates the movement, but with a dancer from above, a long lens was out of the question. I was at 29mm, so not an ideal lens length for panning. I augmented the rotation of the floor in post.</image:caption></image:image></url>

How do I photograph a dancer from the perspective of the floor? And, can she twirl? This half was harder. I ended up building a glass table shooting platform with a 4&#039;x6&#039; sheet of 1&quot; plexiglass that weighs almost 150 pounds. The platform has a 2&#039;x6&#039; deck on either side of the glass for the dancer to stand on, a space to prep herself and to catch herself. The whole thing is elevated 4&#039; in the air, so I needed room post point so she wouldn&#039;t fall. Inside (which now doubles as my solar kiln for drying my wood sculptures), I shoot through a small hole in black duvetene. Everything is covered in black duvetene inside; otherwise, I&#039;d see myself in the reflection from the underside of the glass. So yes, it&#039;s hot in there, and not easy to be heard from above. But twirling possible? Besides being too slippery to spin safely, the plexiglass scratches very easily when a foot rotates. Static en pointe, with no footprints!</image:caption></image:image></url>

The snow effect was made by setting a garden hose to mist and letting the afternoon sun backlight the water droplets. Until then, I love the moment.</image:caption></image:image></url>

The wheel is called a Cyr wheel and she performs with it for Cirque du Soleil. The crazy thing about this image is that it&#039;s not fake. That blacktop is real - she is literally spinning on Skyline Boulevard in the Oakland hills, overlooking the entire Bay Area. I took out a tuft of grass growing in the new blacktop on the left and a twig peaking up in the distance on the right. Another wonderful opportunity to work with someone who plays for a living, even if we did have to have multiple people looking out for cars while I lay in the gutter at the side of the road.</image:caption></image:image></url>

She was a heptathlete and her main sport is javelin. Javelins, however, are not an easy prop to find. Not surprisingly, no one wants to rent or lend you a six foot spear. A discus, on the other hand, can be ordered through the mail. 70-200 lens shot wide open at f2.8 at 110mm.</image:caption></image:image></url>

Before buying a fancy housing for my Canon r5II, I used what is basically a silicone sock that you slide over any camera body. It has a glass front that spins onto your lens, and a glass ring so you can see the viewfinder, a surprisingly useful and inexpensive option. That is, so long as you don&#039;t need to adjust your settings - doing that can be a pain.</image:caption></image:image></url>

I wanted to make an image of that terrifying moment when you feel yourself waking from a nightmare, but you cannot move or get yourself fully awake. Trapped. I backed up in the water just outside the silk, so that the afternoon sun backlit some of the particles in the water. This filled the foreground with wonderful circles of bubbling dust. 20mm lens at f5.6 at 1/400th of a second.</image:caption></image:image></url>

But, with each breath, your eyes focus on falling drops of water framed under your out-stretched arm. A brief peak at the surface. Almost always the same. And, yet always different. That&#039;s what I set out to capture, and boy was it a challenge. I tried swimming under someone else with my camera, but that didn&#039;t work at all, and it was quite awkward. It had to be a self portrait but it took 8 more attempts to get it right â holding the camera upside down in my left hand while swimming an odd loping gate with my right. I love the series that began in the warm waters of September but wasn&#039;t technically successful until the cold waters of November. 16mm at f5.6 at 1/8000th of a second.</image:caption></image:image></url>

Throughout the 90s I would bike from San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge and up Mt. Tam to this area on the Bolinas Ridge Road. So many of my early bicyling portfolio images were shot up here on this stretch of road. So, when my old assistant from the mid 90s, who now runs an online art platform, asked if I had an image of the hills in Marin County that they could print for a client 9 feet wide, I jumped at the chance to head up there. On a beautiful clear summer evening, I shot a series of vertical images with a 50mm lens in order to stitch them together to create a huge, detailed file for the massive 9 foot print.</image:caption></image:image></url>

Spread the skin apart, smear it with sticky stuff, blow it dry and then let go â instant wrinkles. The eybrows and chops were glued on and then &#039;painted&#039; with eyeliner and mascara.
