002-phone
Runner's World editor, Liz Reap, said 'Can you get a phone and bring it somewhere remote?' The story was about how Runner's World editors could and would answer anyone's questions about running. So I rented a full-on payphone - the kind on a pedestal that you used to see at airports. I loaded the whole 6' phone booth into my Isuzu Trooper and drove with a model to the Black Rock Desert, North of Reno Nevada. Yes, the same place that hosts Burning Man, though this would have been back when they had only hosted one or two up there. We drove two miles out onto the salt flats and then shot him hopping away from the phone, question answered! Shot cross-processed, Fuji transparency film processed as a negative (C-41), then printed by me for the magazine. Once the sun set it was completely black, there was no way we could find where we had entered. We had to camp there for the night in order to find our way out in the morning. I used to say that if an image made me laugh like Beavis and Butthead while I was shooting it, I knew it would be good. And, this still makes me smile every time I see it.
